First of all: Captain Blood, I can only say WOW
I had to vote for your entry. The theme, the paintjob, the greens, the Shakespearian feel!

What make are they? And what make are the buildings?

Secondly: Silly me.... I ran out of white glue and wnet out and bought a product that was almost identical to the one I normally use. Only this was "Cascol wood glue light polyuretan". When hardening this one rises like a soufflé (if only mu own soufflés could rise that evenly). So had to spend the last hours hacking it down to size, and the bases still look horrible.  Sad

On a more positive note: The shields are my first real attempt at free hand, and I think  the eyes are my best so far.  Smiley

But boy, oh boy,  Captain Blood's team makes me happy just watching it  Cheesy

Articman, you are a great and generous competitor. I really like your Masai too - in fact, before we got rematched, I already voted for them, because you seem to me to be improving your technique with every round.

May I offer you my basing formula?   Coarse sand mixed in with acrylic paint and a dob of PVA glue. I have mixed a big pot of this gloop, and it lasts for years! It's easy to paint on and move around until you're happy with the end texture, sets rock hard, and is easy to overpaint. I usually stick a few pieces of aquarium gravel into it for rocks. Then a dark basecoat, a medium earthy colour drybrushed over, and a very pale highlight to pick out the pointy bits. Give it a try - it's ultra easy, quick, and will give you a much neater base.

The figures are from Foundry's Sea Dogs and Swashbucklers range, sculpted by the incomparable Mike Owen. About 3 years ago, Mike told me he was intending to produce some more of these under the Artizan banner, but alas, he keeps getting waylaid by other projects!
(MORE Arthurians and Saxons??? For goodness sake - I ask you! That's about 100 ranges of those out there now!   )

The buildings are an assortment of PMC Games (was TSS, now on eBay as sellthatstuffboy), Conflix, Ziterdes, and the market hall in the background by TM terrain. Have about 20 of these timbered buildings now - make for a great layout and great town skirmish games for swashbucklers!

Masai rule, I would normally vote for them whatever they were against, but Capt. Blood is such an artist, I simply had to give him my vote. Absolutely beautiful.

Don't you think Sir John would be cowering at the back, gulping down some Sack, rather than striking an heroic pose at the front?

Plynkes - yes, you are right of course. He'd be bringing up the rear with a flagon of choice canary. And these chaps are far too neat and tidy for the disreputable likes of Pistol, Nym and Bardolph - but the central character is so clearly Falstaff that I just had to get some liveried oiks alongside him! (What a clever artist that Mr Owen is - pure oozing character in an inch high figure... )

Hammershield - yep. All from the Foundry Sea Dogs collection here..

Worth noting, by the way, that there are several more packs in this range that Mike sculpted, which never made it onto the catalogue. Including some really great figures, some of which you can see in Mr Dallimore's book. You have to ring up and ask nicely for them. Worth getting - including a Sea Dog gun and crew.  Smiley

Thank you all for your kind words, and Captain Blood for the great basing tip Cheesy

The friendliness of this competition is really great, as is the showcase of different painting styles and figures.

My lead mountain will grow to proportions never heard of before in my little
corner of the world. If global warming strikes I will be able to climb to the top of it and start painting from top down to the water level.

The Masai are very well done, but Falstaff and company really took the prize here.
