Title: Whats next from Empress?
Post by: timg on January 04, 2011, 05:05:02 PM
Just bit of fishing here. Anyone got any ideas on any future additions to their colonial range? I'd like to see Frontier Light Horse, Native contingents, ASC and medical troops, Naval Brigade, casualties, lots of Boers and hopefully some more personalities......well one can only ask. lol

Boers, for the first war, so with earlier rifles.
Naval brigade 24pdr rocket tube and crew.

Hopefully some more of the colonial range... just to give me a chance to paint all the modern Afghans I got for Christmas.  ;)

I would like highlanders, sailors and native troops for the Brits. But I still have tons of models that needs paint anyway, so I am not in the hurry.

Any additions to their Zulu War range is very welcome. As for the next range they would do.... I'd love them to do NW Frontier!!

Frontier Light Horse... I may have mentioned this in the past  :D

To be honest, a head sprue would do as the Newcastle Rifles/Buffalo Border Guard figures are in the uniform.

Hopefully some Blackshirts and Alpini figures for the Abyssinian Range.  An Italian command set complete with a radio+operator wold be nice.

How about some parachute-equipped sheep (http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=22569.0) for the Italians?

I was very pleased to get the Boers, so I do hope that part of the range will be expanded in 2011.
I'd quite like some Frontier Light Horse and some Native Infantry. I'd probably ask for some varriants on the Zulus, to help me paint another 30 or so during this year, but I'll probably be shouted at again for suggesting that... :'(

Some British High Command would be nice too and some Highlanders.
David

Another vote for characters from Rorkes drift, I would like the following packs in light of a project I am working on-
1)Surgeon Reynolds, Rev Smith,Commissary Dalton, Lt Adendorf
2)Cpl Scheiss, AN Other Cpl NNC , a walking wounded NMP and ditto regular infantryman form the hospital.

I dont disagree with any of the other suggestions either!

How could i forget Reynolds! Yes a nice medical group would be good and the Commissary chaps too. Im considering taking the helmet off one of the NMP figures and adding a wooly hat to make a Trooper Lugg.

Although I dont like doing conversions I have realised to do a 1:1 ratio for the defenders I will have to do a few, at the moment just concentrating on redcoats....its a long term project.  :D

Dont suppose you got the numbers to hand for the redcoat defenders? I have about 70 all finished so far and finishing another ten or so at the moment?

I will let you know exact numbers tonight, its about 140 all in iirc. I think there a few different opinions but Im basing my force on the named list in Mike Snooks 'Like Wolves on the Fold' book.

I have about 70 privates base coated.

This is from a post from the ladies themselves made last spring:

Quote
Moving forward the next cavalry will be the Native Horse, Imperial Mounted Infantry and Boers. Then we will cover the other Auxilliary cavalry units and the Regular cavalry the Dragoons and Lancers.

In the meantime we will have some more releases being announced during the coming days and weeks, much of which will be on our stand at Salute TA26.

http://wdlovesme.19.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=7054&highlight=empress (http://wdlovesme.19.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=7054&highlight=empress)

Looks like so far, for AZW, only the Boers have been released since them.  I asked at the time for them to model 30 Field Company RE and Blood's Pontoons. Not sure the idea ever got any traction.  ;)

Empress have been reading this thread but we are going to be a tease and not actually tell you what we are working on at the moment. Industrial espionage and all that.  However it is a lot of stuff, which will largely be released March, April. Some earlier.

There will be a large number of packs for the AZW. If these work out as planned they will probably be the best packs in the range…….so far.

We are also working on a large number of releases in the other ranges as well as two completely new ranges….........….one of which is a new Colonial Period currently being sculpted by Mr Hicks. We are gradually putting the ‘greens’ together at this moment and getting regular photographs of the sculpts as they are made. To say that we are very excited by the range so far is an understatement.

More than that we are not prepared to divulge. ;)

Whatever it is at the very least it will be able to be cherry picked for officers etc I am sure, not to mention the VSF brigade.

I know what I want it to be but I doubt I will be that lucky but as Mother used to say "you will have to wait and see"

Title: Re: Whats next from Empress?
Post by: abu iskander on January 20, 2011, 01:39:04 PM
As a betting man, I would put my money on a Northwest Frontier range. Why? Of the major British conflicts, one else really does a good one anymore that I know of, with the exception of the Foundry Hill Tribesman (which is a small number of figures).  Also, with respect to the sculpting, I would say that from Taliban to Pathans is not a huge jump in some ways.

This is despicable!!!
I hate being teased...unless its by a woman with a feather dus...ohhh never mind.

If you do more character packs for Rorkes Drift then Ill buy into the new range too, if you dont I wont! Ok, I probably will but im not happy , unless its NW frontier , then Im delighted, but i cant afford the time for a new range, but Ill buy them anyway.

You see, ya got me in a tiswas

New range.................NWF i reckon too or possibly 2nd Boer War, both I've noticed seem to be on a lot of wish lists? Suppose a complete range for French North Africa, FFL,Spahis, Tirrailieurs, mule companys................ is just a forlorn hope lol.

More Zulu War stuff as well and better than before? Going by the quality of whats already been released then im getting excited too  ;D! Perhaps the Ladies can drop the odd clue now and then to see what our imaginations come up with?

NWF by Mr Hicks would indeed be awesome! If it is'nt NWF then hopefully Empress will consider it as a project for 2012. Whatever the new colonial range turns out to be its got me excited! Just about to start on my Zulu War project, so the news that this range is getting alot of attention this year is very cool.

Title: Re: Whats next from Empress?
Post by: jazbo on January 21, 2011, 10:08:56 AM
NWF would be awesome as it would mean not having to pay the insane Foundry prices for tribesmen anymore.

Maori wars?  Something compatible with the AZW figures?  Can't be Sudan, they would not be mad enough to take on the Perry's.

More Transvaal war Boers would be good, it's the 130th anniversary this year and I am aiming to do a few games later in the year should the range appear.

Hmm, so what else could it be?  Ashanti wars???

And what of the new AZW figures? Naval Brigade (I already have Perrys and Copplestones, although a 24pdr rocket team as shown in the Osprey British Forces In Zululand would be good, hint hint)?  NNH I would expect to be in there and probably FLH.

I bow to your superior knowledge but I presumed the Boers thay had released were for the first Boer War?

Title: Re: Whats next from Empress?
Post by: Plynkes on January 21, 2011, 07:42:14 PM
No, they are in their Zulu War range (listed under "British") and are for that war. For one thing most of them are carrying Martinis (Westley-Richards carbines would be much more representative of Transvaal War Boers if Ian Knight is correct, and he seems to know his stuff), but the real clincher is that the one with the helmet is meant to be Piet Uys (not named as such on their website, but he was so identified here when they announced them). Uys commanded the Transvaal Burgher Force in the Zulu War and was killed at the battle of Hlobane.

Title: Re: Whats next from Empress?
Post by: Mors on January 21, 2011, 09:42:15 PM
Oh , ok . I presumed as there was only a couple years difference in the conflicts they could be used for both , still if it's only the type of rifle thats different that wouldn't worry me too much , although I understand why it would some.

Title: Re: Whats next from Empress?
Post by: Plynkes on January 21, 2011, 10:47:24 PM
I agree with you. I'd have no problem using them either. I'm not saying they can't be used for the Transvaal War, merely that their intended purpose is clearly for the Zulu War, for the reasons already outlined.

Maybe an addon for the Zulu War stuff, and cover the Xhosa wars? That stuff was kicking of all the time including around the time the Zulus and the Brits were happily doing each other in.

Oh but, Ultra Modern Brits, I need some Ultra Modern Brits for my 'When the world finally collapses in on itself' project!

I too have to say that NW Frontier by Empress would be an outstanding range if AZW is anything to go by. Lots of colourful units to paint.

Others that might be of interest would be Boxer rebellion and Russo-Japanese War. What about the first Afgan war (retreat from Gandamak etc) in the 1840's?

Oh yes, another vote for modern Brits as well please!

Sadly that makes two of us. I really, really want to get loads of their figures, both Zulu War and the modrn SAS types but am having to be disciplned and focus on the Pery Sudan range for my current purchases.  :(

My guess is we will have to await Salute as so many centre releases around this show - great if you are London based or can get and exceedingly annoying if you cannot.

If its Boxer or Russo/Japanese my wallet will be totally f**ked, I have quite a few of the zulu brits and dont have an interest in that period/location. Wouldn't mind seeing NWF either.

Well guys, firstly thanks for your patience.

As originally stated we would start to announce a stream of releases including a new Colonial range in the March /April period.

Well we are nearly there and so hopefully by the end of next week we can put you out of your misery.

However we have a question from all of you.

There is obviously an interest in NWF. But what period?

2nd Afgan War and the 1880's, 1890's, 1900-1920, 1920's, 1930's? Give us a clue please  ;)

Thanks for your help.  :)

The Pontoonier stuff is 3rd Anglo-Burmese War - is that the same as NWF?

My vote would be 2nd Afghan War.  Though I must admit my interest lies more with the Afghans than with the British.

The uniforms are virtually identical, but there are small, yet noticeable differences : the cork helmets didn't have puggarees during the second Afghan War, and the water bottle was different. British troops also campaigned in Afghanistan with a variety of accoutrements : some infantry regiments had been issued with the Valise Equipment while others still had older items of kit, notably the 1859 pattern expense pouch worn on the waistbelt.

I prefer the 1890s NWF, since that is when the big campaigns of the Tirah and Malakand Field Forces and the Relief of Damn-it-I-can't-remmeber-the-name-of-the-fort happened. (Big Field Force put together to relieve fort and the main column spent weeks fighting it's way through the passes but got beaten to the job by a detachment of Indian sappers climbing over the mountains.  lol)

But I'm not overly obsessed about the small details and happily use 2nd Afghan War/1880s figures too.

But British in poshteens would be spiffaroo!

And the Pontoonier figures are very nice but hard to get hold of.

I hope the new range is the Boxer rebellion, or Maori wars.   THE CID.

I'd plump for 1930s. Particularly if the range ran to appropriate Indian Army troops, in shorts, bit of a gap in the market there.
Bugles and a Tiger, my great dream for gaming. Inspiration to paint a Hawker Hart and Compnay B are producing a suitable Light Tank MkII.

Second choice for me would be the (Great) Pathan Revolt 1897. Ok, so Foundry did some suitable figures but I have two children to clothe and feed.

For those wanting suitable figues for the 1880s I'd suggest you take a look at the Castaway Arts range. These are the best stuff they have done and that's saying something. The Indian Army figures in particular are superb. The British army come in both valise equipment and the old 1859 pattern. Who else does British infantry in pith helmets and greatcoats for God's sake?

yes, Chitral. :) Thank you.

2nd Anglo-Boer War, Boxer Rebellion and 1890s NWF are all underserved right now.

Most ot the Colnial figures out there seem to be focussed on the AZW/2nd Afghan War/Martian Invasion periods.

The Pathan Revolt of 1897 had loads of campaigns; Tirah, Malakand, Black Mountain, Chitral etc. involving huge field forces, besieged forts, desparate stands. It's really what's in every gamers mind when they play NWF. It's the backstory to Gunga Din and Lives of a Bengal Lancer.

I imagine some (or many?) of the figures could be used for 2nd Boer War, Boxer Rebellion and Omdurman armies too.

James

I suppose the Second Opium War is out of the question...?
I've looked high and low for figures for the Second Opium War and Taiping Rebellion, apart from Foundry there isn't much out there at all. For two wars with such gaming potential it seems a pity that they've been largely neglected so far. I'd love to see a range to cover them in Empress quality! :)

The Boxer Rebellion would be nice too!  ;)

2nd Afghan War and 1880's. Actually I'd prefer 1890's but 18180's is more likely to be generally appreciated and I'm not that fussy on the details :)

Well, sadly, we might be alone in that aspiration. I put up a 100 Club request on Eureka's website about 3-4 years ago and it didn't garner sufficient numbers. You can use Foundry Opium Wars in shell jackets and supplement with BAL figures from their Carlist War range. That's the best option available at present. Alas nobody makes figures in belltop shakos and the dress jacket.

I'm surprised you don't want to recreate the earlier career of Townsend. Villain of Kut but once the plucky Victorian hero of the NWF, holding an isolated fort agianst incessant attack with just a handful of Sikhs, it's almost the apogee of colonial gaming.

In all honesty the North West Frontier has never really grabbed my imagination. I find it a bit boring. I think my wargaming soul is definitely African. But the 'Earlies' have a certain something that appeals a little, despite this. Probably that is just a testament to George MacDonald Fraser's ability to bring a place and time to life via comedy and shagging.

I can see why you say that. Africa is after all much larger than the provinces which make the NWF. Personally, I game it as a part of Back of Beyond, or the Great Game as it continued into the Soviet era, which makes it much, much more interesting. I take plenty of liberties, of course, letting Indian troops cause trouble in the various Trans-Himalayan turkish, tibetan and chinese homelands. And vice-versa, of course. Central Asia, in that respect, is not far behind Africa when it comes to the melange of cultures and powers competing for influence.

The one thing it does *not* offer is Big Game hunt, but as I said, it's got the Great Game so...

Dear Empresses,

Given the strong desire of people to see a fantastic NWF range, I would strongly suggest that when in London you visit the 'Road to Kabul' display at the National Army Museum in Chelsea...and send Mr. Hicks there on a field trip...I can make sure he sees all the good stuff!

Here is a link:

http://www.national-army-museum.ac.uk/exhibitions/special-displays/road-kabul-british-armies-afghanistan-1839-1919

As for which period of the NWF, the 1st or 2nd Afghan War would be great. I love both periods but must admit that while I would love to see the 1st Afghan war covered, the fact of the matter is that commercially I think the 2nd Afghan War would have a lot more potential.

Enjoy! ;)

And I too am looking forward to what new ranges emerge, as the work of your company is really quite stunning!

Actually, I'd buy early 1840's Brits in coatees and both bell-top shakos and covered and curtained forage caps without hesitation. They could be used not just for Afghanistan but the Scinde campaign as well, and even the Sikh wars as a couple of regiments fought in the coatee/forage cap combo in 1848.

Not sure there is much demand for these unfortunately, but I'd certainly love to see them done by Mr Hicks.

Title: Re: Whats next from Empress?
Post by: carlos marighela on March 08, 2011, 02:27:08 AM
Indeed. When I listed them they were a request for British infantry 1826-1840. I put myself down for an initial 50. It would have been lovely to see what Alan Marsh could have done with these. If anyone wanted to go shares in a range I would be happy to talk to Nic about a private commission. Useful for so many things. Supressing rambunctious Canucks, seizing Aden, crushing Baluchis, battling Afghans or pushing drugs in China. Remarkably useful figures that nobody has seen fit to make. Niche market of course. If you wanted to be creative you could even do a very early Falklands/Malvinas mini campaign or skirmish game, expelling Argentino interlopers.

Scinde is a wonderful campaign, although the requirement to buy several hundred Foundry Baluchis might be a bit off putting in 28mm. At least painting them would be fairly easy. Napier's peccavi despatch remains the best military pun ever.

Arm wrestling is good! Its a pity conkers have been judged so dangerous these days, that would have been another way.

Perhaps the easiest answer would be nude figures and do games about ambushed army bathing parties................

Quite like the idea of the Indian Army from the 20/30's, British in 'frontier kit' with cawnpore helmets for a change from the wolseley and perhaps some nice Bengal lancer types. Oh and of course 4th Ghurkas for Masters fans!

If Hammers is so rich then I don't see why he can't finance 1830s-40s, 1870s-80s, 1890s, and 1920s-30s all from the personal fortune he made swindling the New Guinea natives by selling them Cillit Bang at an enormous mark-up and telling them it was gin.

At the suggestion of nude figures or at 'Cawnpore' helmets?

True story, there was a chap who commissioned a sculpt of a 1970s Playtex lingerie ad from the 1970s. I was shown the sculpt, then I was shown the lovingly preserved photo torn from some aged edition of The Woman's Weekly. It was a remarkably good likeness. Then I was told the back story to the commission. Suddenly I felt an irresistable urge to wash my hands, indeed shower. I'm supposing that wherever the chap who commissioned it lived the local internets were deficient in 'cawn' or 'pore' or something along those lines.  :o

Hi Tommy,

Nope, I don't work for the NAM, just find it to be a great museum. I have been doing research for a series of British in India books (starting with the Sikh Wars) and it has proven to be an invaluable resource. If you haven't had the chance, you should check it out, especially the Afghan exhibit. There is also an India exhibit upstairs (I think it is still running) which is also really good.

Enjoy!

All my best,

Ark

I think Empress better give us some teasers before a few people on forum get over-excited.

Before reading the comments I was content to go with 1880's..if nothing more than to flesh out my colonial armies of that period. However,  Perries already have some nice Indian service dress minis for that era..and the more I think about it I reckon that 1st Afgan war would be much more colourful OR the 1897 campaigns would also let me look at some other colonial projects. Those would be my votes. WHATEVER they do in NWF, I'll end up buying a bucket load I suppose, in the same way as AZW, which incidentally I hope will continue to grow and give us more gems like the hollywood characters packs!

Nah, sorry Plynkes they are nothing like Clangers. Those Quar are more like badly stuffed, bipedal aardvarks.

However I do like that armoured tractor on Zombiesmith's site. That design may be adapted by the Imperial Ironfoundry of Kaiserstan at some future date.

Time will tell as to whether the rumours about literary themed miniature ranges are true. This one being a range based on all the characters in E.M. Forster's novels with a forthcoming interwar range to tackle the works of Christopher Isherwood and W.H. Auden . Word on the street is that the Joe Orton themed modern range has been quietly killed off.  :)

Bit naughty giving the Ambush Alley folk the benefit of a teaser with pics for the new moderns but the poor folk of LAF get nada.

Hi everyone,

Well we are pleased to announce on Lead Adventure a new range that will be released early April. This announcement only covers Colonial releases and not moderns or our impending 20mm WW2 range.

The Maori War 1845-6. This range is a customer commission and so it did not feel right to say to much until the customer was just about to receive some toys which is now the case.

The following pictures, only a very small sample of the range, as lovely as they are, do not do justice to the actual figures which are gorgeous. Well done Mr Hicks. Big kiss from the Empresses.

The following months will see quite a big push on the AZW. Three packs of dismounted Boers as asked for LAF members. A Lord Chelmsford three figure command group is almost complete plus a RA Gatling gun. This will quickly be followed by a Naval Gatling. Sadly we had hoped to be also releasing a series of packs showing the 17th Lancers at full charge but we have got a bit behind. The specially commissioned horses are virtually complete but we have to do the riders and so this will now be available towards the end of April/ beginning of May. Followed by the Dragoon Guards.

As stated following on from these will be a flow of AZW releases, the intention being to get the period pretty much covered this year. Time will tell but we will get there in the end but we want to clear the decks.

For the future Empress are also happy to announce that we are currently working on NWF. This will be the 1890’s period covering Chitral. Sorry but its more Khaki but we do not actually do any Khaki Colonials so this is new to us. Should be available in time for Christmas 2011

Plus we have already begun planning a very large Colonial range for 2012, which has very little, if any khaki! Please do not pester for details on this as we are not about to tell anyone for at least a year, possibly longer. Oh and there is also another middle size range set in China but we have planned that for a couple of years, we even started making the toys but got pulled into another direction. Ah I must not forget to mention………? What a tease we are.

So little time and sooooo much to do!!!!

Now what's up with the moderns?

Well worth the wait and agree the chap who originated the range should have the first news. Yet more superb sculpts from Mr Hicks, i joked about invisble men but its certain they too would be spot on if he did any!

Chitral should please a lot of folk on here as will the new AZW stuff. Plus we have the additional bonus of two more ranges to guess at! Im betting Boxer Rebellion for the China one but not got a clue for the other one.

Beautiful sculpts!  Maori Wars is one to tick off the list soon then.  Also good news on the Boers, and I look forward to the NWF range, which will fill a massive gap and of course the tribesmen can be used across pretty much the whole preiod if designed right.

Good news, good work.

The only downside are those horrendously complicated Maori tattoos  :(  Goodness knows how I'd ever paint those!

Come on, man. This is no time to wimp out. I've painted 'em on 15mm Maoris, those big lads should be child's play by comparison. Shouldn't they?   ;)

My only downside is that I've already gamed this war in 15mm, and don't feel like doing it again. But they sure are some lovely figures. Might get a couple of Maoris just to paint for fun, and I reckon I could find a use or two for those Brits.

I've had a soft spot for this period for many years, since I was laid up ill for a week and read Michael Barthorp's book "To face the Daring Maori". I completely forgot to feel sick while I was reading!

Here is a range of figures worthy of the unusual (in many ways unique) conflict. Thank you.

Cracking looking figures!!  :-*  :-*

Looking forward to the releases for the AZW!

NWF in the 1890's will do for me, I'll definitely be buying this range, cant wait for Christmas now!!

The new large colonial range sounds very exciting! Very little if any khaki was worn, I cant help thinking it maybe the Indian Mutiny, but thats a wild guess.

As for the range in China, I'd love it to be The Second Opium War, but if I were a betting man I'd go with The Boxer Rebellion, no doubt I'll be buying this range too.....I need to get a better paid job to cope with all the spending!!

that's a win win for me..

I hadn't intended on doing Maori Wars but its only a stones throw over the puddle from here and it's a country I have an affinity for...so go on then.

I really like how Empress and Mr Hicks are focusing on colonial periods and not darting around too much making martian zombies and the like...they just keep getting better and better and the detailed research is coming through in the figures.

Looking forward to doing Chitral and Black Mountain campaigns as well next year! Well done.

I doubt Empress will do the Indian Mutiny, Mutineer Miniatures a already doing a great job on that range which will be hard to match.

About the Mauri Wars, that is nothing for me at the moment, the models look great though.

I will be looking forward to the new AZW models too.

Cool figures

Those Maori war Brits can also be used for a variety of conflicts ranging from the First Carlist war to the first Anglo-Sikh war, all the more so as I imagine the figures are compatible with the Perry scuplts.

Excellent figures as usual from Mr. Hicks.

More importantly to me (it will be awhile before I get around to re-strarting my long-ago interrupted Moari Wars project) is this statement:

"This range is a customer commission and so it did not feel right to say to much until the customer was just about to receive some toys which is now the case."

Seriously, I can commission my own range?  This interets me greatly.  I didn't find any details about this on the Empress' website, though.  Perhaps someone could elaborate on this

I've been planning on putting together a Maori Wars demo game for what seems like years now but alas, until recently I couldn't find any mini's that were worth the effort to paint up to a high standard.

This will certainly no longer be a problem! Watch out for a full on Brit attempt to take a Maori fortification at a wargames show near you in the not so distant future!!

This is absolutely fantastic news!  The New Zealand Wars have been on my 'to do' list for ages, but apart from some of the Eureka range, no figures have really done it for me.

Adding to the coincidence is that I am currently busy writing a scenario for the Lard Island scenario competition, based on the Fall of Kororareka using 'Sharp Practice'.  These figures will be perfect to recommend for anyone wanting to play my scenario!

I like the new bad guys that were previewed on AA forum -very nice. It would be great to see some attention given to the Middle East up to 1982 etc.

Boxer Rebellion for 2012 would be lovely if this occurs.

Congrats ladies,

The bugler figure immediately brings to mind a skirmish game based on the Battle of Boulcott Farm (Lower Hutt, near Wellington), which is famous for a bugler's actions in raising the alarm.  Though for that scenario, he would've had just one arm, having had the other one chopped off in the surprise attack.  Maybe Empress could do a one-armed variant?!

This is the only range that could be used for battles in my own local area (Wellington), unlike for wargamers from the UK, Europe or America, which have all had longer histories of battles fought on local soil.  So we Wellingtonians should therefore be over the moon about this!  I certainly am!

I think a huge Maori war-canoe in all its splendour, would look terrific.  Have it manned with lots of warrior paddlers, with their paddles raised in a war-chant.  Impressive!

Perhaps with Hone Heke standing, with the American flag fluttering from the stern post, as at Kororareka Bay.

I think the really wonderful and simultaneously evil thing about this range is that it coincides with  the RWC being held in  Un Zud and, as we all know, the All Blacks invariably choke in the cup. Exquisite timing. Maybe you could work a RWC themed vignette of a collapsed scrum with the Webb Ellis Cup tantalisingly just out of reach into the range?  lol

Opponent? I know which side I would rather be on in that contest  lol

But have to agree as a model it would look awesome.

Not sure I want to go down the Maori War road but those British are usable for all sorts of other things I've fancied doing.

On my blog I've posted some background info from Bjoern, who commissioned this new range from Empress Miniatures. He has given me permission to publish this:

http://arteis.wordpress.com/2011/03/17/885/

On another matter, so far as Maori war-canoes go, they are truly amazing things to see on the water.  In 1990 I took part in a reenactment of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.  I played the part of one of the five New South Wales mounted troopers who accompanied Governor Hobson at the actual signing in 1840.  We were rowed to the beach at Waitangi in a naval cutter (all real navy men, but dressed in 19th century gear).  That in itself was an amazing enough experience.

But it became even more awe-inspiring when, as I sat there in the sternsheets of the boat with Hobson and his party, on a brilliant blue sea under a cloudless sky, several huge war-canoes (or waka) paddled up to us and formed a welcoming escort.  Some looked as though they had nearly 100 men in them (I'll have to do some research as to the actual maximum number they could carry, but that is the way they looked to me).  The warriors were all in their finest regalia, chanting hauntingly across the water as they dipped and raised their paddles in unison, silver droplets sparkling in the sun.  The massive waka were decked in extra feathers and other special finery for the occasion.  It was one of those spine-tingling moments you sometimes get in reenacting.

I have a few photos of this reenactment, including some of the waka and also of some Maori chiefs, so I'll try to scan them in the next few days and put them up on my blog.  I'll let you know here when I get round to doing that.

Finally, if anyone wants to know more detail on one of the big waka at that reenactment, take a look at this webpage:

Wow! Great figs. I remember reading some great articles about the wars on MW many years ago. I think those Brits look good for Carlist War BAL and Portuguese Liberals for the PCW.

All nice stuff though the sailors swing it for me, lovely sculpts. Will there be landing parties to accompany them so those early gunboat dramas can be recreated? Must admit i saw the civvys and thought of a certain ruined building in Texas............

The civvy chap third from the left in glasses would make a great Jameison, the Alamo engineer Nick.

The Empress website mentions 15 new modern Brit sculpts. Any chance of a peek?

Nice to see all the shots of all the Maori wars figures up on their site. Especially like the Royal Navy fellows.

As promised on the previous page, here are some photos of when in 1990 I took part in the official 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi:

http://arteis.wordpress.com/2011/04/07/reenactment-of-the-treaty-of-waitangi-1840/

These may be of interest, especially bearing in mind the new Empress Miniatures figures depict the wars that broke out in the exact same area only five years later.

Great pictures.

The police uniforms are very interesting, especially the hats.

Is the police facial hair real or glued on?  :)

Title: Re: Whats next from Empress?
Post by: Arteis on April 06, 2011, 09:28:28 PM
Um, the facial hair is glued on.  Shades of the movie 'Gettysburg'!

The hats were a bone of contention.  The only record we found for these uniforms was written.  The hats were described as "cabbage tree hats".  My contention was that this meant a kind of brimmed straw hat, but my colleagues felt it was an early double-peaked shako.  They won, but I'm still not sure that I was not correct!

In any case, I would not base any figures on these uniforms (and, anyway, there were only five of these guys in the whole country)!

Third picture, blokes in row boat. Is that a mildly hirsute Daniel Craig (current Bond actor)? If not he has a stunt double.

Any chance that the upcoming NWF 1890's range will have the Gurkhas in bush hat and shorts? I think they didn't get that uniform until 1902 and I know Copplestone does these for WW1, but I would like to see them in the older gear. What about it, Empress?

The only thing that would really distinguish a 1914 Gurkha from an early 1900s one would be his SMLE (though I'm not even sure when the Gurkhas were first issued them). The uniform and kit would be the same, as far as I can tell.

You just need to decide how much the wrong rifle bothers you, if Empress don't accommodate your wishes.

Hi guys and gals,

We are getting a lot of pre orders coming through for all our new stuff, which is of course encouraging.

However if you do want to ensure that you get what your heart desires it is best to bang us through an e mail on the site so that we can safe guard it for you to collect on the day.  ;)

Re the NWF we have not got to the point of design yet so cannot say exactly what we are doing other than that Ghurkas will be done. (One of our favourites.) They will be wearing the 1890's kit which from memory will be the pill box hat.  I think the famous bush hat was issued in the early 1900's.

oh well, I guess it'll be Woodbine or Copplestone!

Please checkout the book "The Frontier Ablaze" The North-West Frontier Rising 1897-98 by Michael Barthorp. Excellent book with lovely coloured illustrations by Douglas N. Anderson. You will see the Gurkha in all his charging glory wearing pill box hat among other fine coloured illustrations. The B&W photos are very good too.

Cheers,

Helen

Actually, I have A TSATF platoon of the old Ral Partha Colonials Gurkhas, and they've never disappointed!! I'll have to check that Barthorp book, as I have almost everything else he's written! Always my first recommendation for a colonials author, followed closely by Farwell.

OK everybody this is the last announcement of impending new releases before Salute.

If you come by the Empress stand you will see some very interesting new figures. They are a bit bigger than our normal figures though. We think that they are called 3 ups.  ;)  :D

Come and have a look and say hi. :)

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I had submitted a New Zealand Wars scenario (using the 'Sharp Practice' rules) into the Too Fat Lardies' scenario competition.

Well, it made second place, and a link to it has just been published on the Lard Island Blog:

http://toofatlardies.co.uk/blog/?p=472

The topic for the scenario is the Flagstaff War, so its perfect for Empress Miniatures' new range (of which my first order is on its way down here as I type).

Please bear in mind I am no historian, only a gamer.  So, yes, there probably are historical inaccuracies and liberties taken.  But for me, its all just a game!

Enjoy!
